Not just a Pageant Girl

Thu, June 16, 2011 - 11:12AM 1 Comment

I started this blog about a year ago for one reason, I was a delegate in the Miss Teen Canada World Pageant 2010. But now, it is 2011 and I am not in any pageants. I am graduating high school next week, and I am moving on. I have no blogged at all since the end of the pageant, so I have really missed a lot. But, I am back to blogging. And I do have a reason. But I will get to that later.

After the MTC-W pageant, I remained in Toronto and lived with my Aunt and Uncle. I saw my cousins a lot, and made many friends. I stayed there all summer, and it was the best summer I have ever had. I fell in love with Toronto and the people. And yes, there was a boy. But, I had to leave all of it behind and come back to the good ol' Sault Ste. Marie, to have my grade 12 year. Was I sad to come home? Yes. But, you have to move on.

That's the thing- it is always so much fun to arrive, however, to arrive, you must depart.

Grade 12 was the second best year yet. (Gr.9 will always be the best). Except, even though I am in grade 12, I still feel like a grade 9. Minus all the older boys to look at. Now we're the oldest and we're all scared to look at the other boys because sometimes you think they are grade 11, and find out they are grade 9. YIKES.

I will never forget the people I met, the teachers who supported me. I am very blessed and thankful.

I went to a lot of places this year too:

-Jalapa, Guatemala with the Wells of Hope Program with a team and my dad

-Sudbury for drinks with my sister

-Ottawa to visit my brother and brought my host-brother from Argentina

-Toronto for halloween, March, and June

And that's all I can think of right now.

I got my nose pierced, and cut my hair. So some may believe I look different.

I grew up a bit. I am realizing where I want to go and what I want to do. I know how to be happy because I decide to be, and I never am really stressing about anything. Some believe that's not always a good thing (Dad).

So. The reason why I am blogging again is because,

I am apart of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. I am going to BRAZIL for 1 year. People back home, may be interested in what I am up to in Brazil. So, this is where they can find out.

Rotary Youth Exchange is a 3 year program. I am in year 1. THE PREPARATION. You don't just show up to a country for a year and expect to make it. Well.... that's what they tell us anyway. You have to get your VISA, meet your family, find out what city you are going to, learn the language your country speaks (or like me, just know how to say hello), and some more.

Year 2 will be the year in Brazil. Year 3 will be me coming home, going through re-culture shock.

Sure is going to be an adventure.

More to come. Tchao!

The Experience

Mon, July 19, 2010 - 12:42PM 0 Comments

The Miss Teen Canada World Pageant 2010 has ended. The journey was amazing, absolutely fabulous.

Each and every delegate were beautiful and unique girls, who were so kind and helpful. The days went by so quick, since each day was packed with exciting things to do and see. I wrote all about the week on Delta Chelsea paper, and will soon type that all out so you can read about it. For now, just know that I gained so much from the experience. The shows were definitely the best and most fun for me. I love being the entertainment!! I reached my goal of getting into the Top 20, which I am very happy with and proud of. I don't know what I will be doing next, but I can assure you my path is going to be an exciting one!! Also, congratulations to the winner, Channing, who is going to do a great job of being MTC-W 2010.

I am going to be in Toronto, living with my Aunt Diane and Uncle Mario for the next 3 weeks, so I'll be busy and having lots to do still! I'm so excited!

My Aunt Diane is a calligrapher with her own business, called, Calligraphy by Diane. She's the #1 calligrapher in Toronto. Click here to get to her website.

I'll be working with her as her studio assistant, I am very excited to learn all of which I'll be doing.

So,  any questions for me about my week, I am more then happy to answer, and if there's any fun things here to do in T.O. or events that are happening, please let me know!!

I won't be marked on my blogs anymore, and there won't be any more assignments for me to do, but I'll keep it updated as my online journal.

Leave TOMORROW

Thu, July 08, 2010 - 12:29PM 0 Comments

HI EVERYONE!!

The sun is out and it looks like it's going to be a gorgeous day. My energy level is out of control and I am in a very excited mood. I know heading to the pageant, I am up for anything. Even when I feel tired, I am going to be up and ready. Even if I am hungry, my mood will not be changed. I want all of this so badly, that I am going to go fight for it. I know I can do it, I know I have what it takes, I need to go there and be able to represent myself against 70 other amazing girls. It won't be easy. Whatever happens, happens. I am already proud of myself. I want to go there and learn and have an amazing adventure with people who will become my family. The pageant is 8 days long, starting on Saturday, and I am ready.

Earlier this morning, I spoke with the Miss North Ontario Regional Pageant co-ordinator, Cheryl Kozera. This lady is an amazing person and has really changed my life. After chatting and doing some phone-training, I wrote my essay for the scholarship award. I really think I wrote it well!

Now I am going to go download some music, update the IPOD, and go lay outside.

At 1:00 I am heading back to my mom's house, where I am PACKING! This is probably going to be the most difficult task of all.

Then I am hoping my BBQ works out, and I sell more t-shirts and have fun with friends!

I leave tomorrow evening so I'll be sure to blog once more before heading into the beautiful city of T.O.!!!

I need to do a shout out however, to all of my SUPPORTERS. Thank you so much for everything because I truly would not have been able to have done any of this without you. I want to go to this pageant and make all of you proud. I know though, that I have already done this, and by me having an amazing journey, will be enough. I love each and everyone one of you, you know who you are.

XOXO

THANK YOU'S

GOODBYES

.LIVING.

Those are some of the words that have been swirling around my mind.

At the moment I am in a very fun mood though. Notice all the colours?

Now lets talk about what I have been up to!

Yesterday I had gone to Wal-Mart and Payless. I bought comfy shoes, and at Wal-Mart I bought all my necessities that I'm going to need for my trip, such as TOOTHPASTE:).

Today I had a pedicure, facial, manicure, meeting about next years Guatemala trip, and saw a movie with my sister.

Tomorrow I am going to be packing my LUGGAGE!!! That is going to be the hardest part of all. Tomorrow I will also write my essay for the essay portion of the pageant. I am also going to have a small BBQ/bonfire to sell some more tshirts for Free The Children, and say my goodbyes! I am not only going to Toronto for a week, I am staying for a few more weeks with my wonderful Aunt Diane!! My Nana had cried today when I went and said good bye to her. Aw it was so sad, she had me in tears as well! But I told her that I'll see her soon.

I am going to miss everyone, but I know this is going to be a journey of a lifetime and I can't wait! I have been counting down since day 63 and now it is finally here!

Something that came to my mind today...

I kind of, a little bit, try, to, well... DO EVERYTHING =). I am student council president, rep leader for my grade 12 grad trip to Quebec, Guatemala Wells of Hope leader, heading to Miss Teen Canada, and love spending as much time as I can with friends and family. One day I just decided I wanted to be busy.

Another topic I thought about today...

I believe the next Miss Teen Canada should be someone who is REAL. The past winners have been so, and I truly hope this years will be as well. I have no doubt that she will be. There is a lot of preparation and learning to be a great delegate, however, there is that section where it's an unteachable skill. You just have to have it.

1 more thing...

I LEAVE FRIDAY!!!!!!!! MISS TEEN CANADA PAGEANT STARTS SATURDAY!! I am so excited, I can barely put it into words! This is going to be such an amazing and fabulous time. I can't wait for: the cameras to be on me, to meet the girls and everyone else I'll end up meeting, to be on such a new schedule and new routine, to be in Toronto, and to LEARN!! There will absolutely be tons of learning.

                                  Talk to you tomorrow!! XO

"The change starts within each one of us. And ends only when all children are free to be children"

Craig Keilburger

Blog Assignment #3 - Free the Children – Corporate Social Responsibility and My Citizen Journalism

Tue, July 06, 2010 - 5:50PM 0 Comments

It begins with a dream.

The rest, I wouldn't say is history, I wouldn't say it's easy from here either. It takes a dream, but also hard work. It doesn't matter who you are, you're age, you just need to want it. Having support is always beneficial as well, but sometimes you start it off yourself and everyone else just catches onto the great idea. You're words can be deep, or just simple. It starts off with a dream. And the rest, well, the rest is up to you.

What is it that I am talking about?

MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Lots of people want to make a difference. Many do. Sometimes successful people decide to do something that can make a difference. Sometimes it is just someone wanting to do a small gesture to make a change.

Free The Children is making a very large difference. It continues to grow and make this world a better place. Who started Free The Children? Someone with a dream.

Craig Kielburger, only 12 years old, read an article that lead him to research about child labor. He gathered friends and founded Free The Children.  He traveled to Asia and this is where he announced that the prime minister had a “moral responsibility” to take action on child labor. Successfully, Canadian and Italian governments stiffened laws against their nationals who sexually exploit children in developing countries. Free The Children then began to receive international attention. So far, there has been over 500 schools and implemented projects in 45 developing countries and 65% of organization’s annual funding comes from funds raised by young people. Craig and his brother Marc launched the “O Ambassadors” project on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and they have organized Me to We Day, which has 30,000 students involved.

Now, more and more people, organizations, and companies are joining Free The Children in different ways and the world is continuing to be made a better place to live.

CTV is partnered with Free The Children (FTC). This partnership has reinforced CTV’s commitment to broadcasting programs promoting change. Reasons for companies or organizations to become involved with a charity, comes from someone having a dream. Someone at CTV, or CTV employees or head office, had a dream. They wanted to help make a difference. CTV being partnered with FTC is making a difference. FTC received international attention, and they deserve and continue to gain a lot of attention. What better way to promote themselves then to be on television. The charity gets broadcasted to so many people, especially with that news channel being a very popular network. CTV shares to the world everything that FTC is achieving.

Many articles were written when both partners agreed to signing together for another three years back in 2007. http://www.freethechildren.com/aboutus/mediaroom/docs/0415%20-%20We%20Day%20Broadcast%20Partnership%20Announcement.pdf

“It is our honour to share with all of Canada the spirit, energy and commitment that Free The Children inspires during WE DAY and every other day," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels CTV Inc. “Craig and Marc are visionaries who continue to transform lives in Canada and around the world.” Having this broadcasted, will intrigue many other people to get involved. “With CTV’s continued commitment and support we will empower this generation of youth to lead this building movement of change” – Craig Kielburger. CTV is shown as a company helping many good causes, helping make a difference in many people’s lives, broadcasts a very popular day, and gets a lot of advertising from FTC. Both parties receive beneficial results by being partners.

When Canada’s television networks had united their support to help Haiti, they were collecting donations that went to many charities including Free The Children.

"Make people see you as you want to be seen"

Heidi Klum - Book - Body of Knowledge

Fundraising

Tue, July 06, 2010 - 3:32PM 0 Comments

This week I am going to be at Sears in the Station Mall selling tshirts for Free The Children.

I have been able to speak to many people about the wonderful charity, and about what I do as a titleholder. I love seeing younger girls and how interested they are. I was told I was very pretty today from a beautiful young girl! While wearing the crown and sash you feel you can do anything. Then you take it off and you realize you really didn't need the crown and sash to achieve it all, it was all you.

I have the tshirts on maniquins and set out...

Along with flyers that I have been handing out...
